Buyer's Guide
Buying a beef or hog, start to finish
Hi, I'm Butch. Buying straight from a farm is different from buying at the store. I'll walk you through all six steps — it takes about three minutes.
Step 1 of 6
Find your animal
Butch: “Start in the Marketplace. Every listing is a live animal from a local farm — not a box of meat.”
- Whole, half or quarter. A half beef usually means roughly 220–280 lb of meat in your freezer; a whole hog is roughly 140–210 lb.
- Check the ready date. Farmers list animals months before they finish, so you can reserve now and fill your freezer later.
- Look at the processor. Each listing shows who will process it — OMF here in Fulton, or an OMF Verified Processor closer to the farm.
